SYRA SPOTLIGHT:
ROOKIES IGO & LADYGA RUNNING UP FRONT
Todd Baptista
(7/6/07)

Although they admittedly haven’t had a packed
grandstand to witness it, the stars of the
Seekonk Youth Racing Association have been
putting on some of the closest racing of the
2007 season. The 600-restrictor plate division,
which has been averaging about 14 cars a week,
has been particularly entertaining, with several
newcomers to the already making their presence
felt. Two of the front-running rookies are
Chris Igo, Jr., driver of the #8 machine, and
Nick Ladyga, who pilots the #38.
Both cars
were noticeably fast in pre-season practice and
have gone right to the front when the green flag
unfurled. Igo- pronounced “eye-go”, resides in
North Easton, MA and turns 16 on July 8. He’s
competed for three years in the go kart series
at F1 in Braintree, and won a championship there
in 2006. “I wanted to take the next step up in
racing, and so I looked into mini cup racing,”
Chris explains. “Also, I liked how professional
and mature the SYRA league looked.”
Chris has
quickly established himself as one of the
front-runners in the division and a threat to
capture the top freshman pilot award in the C.
M. Cleaning Company-Right Way Electric-sponsored
#8. “I like the setup, and how the Fast Fridays
are run,” he adds. “I’ve heard that there is a
Rookie of the Year award at the end of the
season, so that is definitely my goal, along
with being consistent every week.”
Driving a
car that was once campaigned here by former SYRA
champion Tom McVay, Igo has finished in the top
five in all five events thus far and catapulted
himself into second place in the point standings
behind three-time winner Casey Sanchez by
finishing first and second in the twin 25 lap
features held on June 29.
Igo
will enter 11th grade at Oliver Ames High School
in Easton in September. Away from the speedway,
Chris enjoys playing baseball, golf, and
spending time with his friends. He’s also
grateful to his family and sponsors for their
support of his racing endeavors. “I would like
to thank my mom, Terry, for the opportunity to
get into mini cup racing, and my dad, Chris, for
all the time and effort he puts into the car. I
also want to thank for my brother, Jon, who
comes to the races every Friday to support me,
and for everyone else who does so, too.”
